For twenty years, the goal of search was simple: get to page one, ideally position one. Rank there, and the clicks follow.

That's no longer the whole game. More and more of your buyers are asking Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for answers instead of scrolling through ten blue links. The AI gives one answer and cites a handful of sources. If you're not one of them, you're invisible to that buyer, even if you rank #1 for the same query.

Here's what we've been seeing, why it happens, and what to do about it.

What We Started Noticing

While doing SEO and content work for our clients, we kept running into the same pattern: pages that ranked on page one for high-intent keywords weren't being cited in the AI answer for those same keywords. Meanwhile, pages that ranked lower were getting quoted.

The ranking pages weren't bad. They were well-optimized, well-linked, and relevant. They just weren't built to be quoted.

Why Ranking and Getting Cited Aren't the Same Thing

Traditional rankings reward a page for being the most relevant, authoritative result for a query overall. An AI answer works differently. It's assembling a response, so it looks for specific, self-contained passages it can lift and attribute: a clear definition, a number, a comparison, a direct answer to the question being asked.

A page can be the best overall result and still be hard to quote. Common reasons:

  • The actual answer is buried under a long, narrative introduction.

  • Numbers are vague ("it depends") or missing entirely.

  • Options are described in paragraphs instead of compared side by side.

  • Key content is hidden in images, tabs, or downloadable PDFs.

  • There's no structured data to help machines understand what's on the page.

What AI Systems Tend to Quote

Across the pages we've analyzed, the content that gets cited tends to share a few traits. AI systems favor content that's built to be quoted:

  • Comparison tables that lay out options, features, or costs side by side.

  • Itemized numbers, such as price ranges, timelines, and step-by-step breakdowns, stated plainly.

  • Decision frameworks that tell the reader which option fits which situation.

  • Questions answered directly, with the answer in the first sentence and the nuance after.

  • FAQ blocks and structured data that make the question-and-answer format explicit.

Most ranking pages don't have them. That's the gap.

How to Check Your Own Pages

You don't need special tools to get a first read on where you stand:

  1. Pick your three most important keywords: the searches that bring you real customers, not just traffic.

  2. Search each one in Google. Is there an AI Overview? Which sources does it cite? Are you one of them?

  3. Ask the same questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note who gets cited or recommended.

  4. Compare your ranking page to the cited pages. What do they have that yours doesn't? A table? A clear number? A direct answer up top?

If you rank but aren't cited, the fix usually isn't a new page. It's restructuring the page you already have.

Ranking Gets You in the Room. Structure Gets You Quoted.

AI search isn't a replacement for SEO. It's built on top of it. The pages that get cited almost always rank already; they simply present their information in a way an AI can use. That's good news: if you've invested in SEO, you already have the foundation.

It also works. A B2B research platform we work with had no presence in Google AI Overviews. After content, page, and technical work, they now appear for their target queries, within a few months.
